Betty Jo Woods was born July 4, 1930, in Blanchard, Oklahoma to parents, Joe Lee Woods and Bertha Mae Woods. As a young child she moved to California with her family. She attended elementary school in the Chino and Pomona area. The Woods family eventually settled in Menifee Valley where Joe Woods worked for Mr. Newport at the Newport Ranch, which is now Sun City. Betty helped build the Woods family home on Holland Road in Menifee. She graduated from Perris High School in 1948 and married her high school sweetheart and lifelong partner, Paul G. Wright on September 1, 1948.
In the 1950’s, Betty and Paul built a home in the small community of Cardiff-By-The Sea. She loved to play tennis and participated in the community tennis team. 1960 she attended Paul Michell Cosmetology School, where she became a professional
licensed Cosmetologist. In 1959 Paul, Betty, and their three daughters started building their current home. In 1962 they moved to Menifee, and for the next forty years, Betty and Paul worked on and completed their beloved home.
Betty was an active member of the Menifee First Baptist Church and then the Canyon Lake Community Church for the last forty years; she served as Sunday School teacher and Sunday School Superintendent at both churches. She also belonged to the local Eastern Star Chapter. Her strong faith in God, her love for her husband, children, friends, and the young people in the community were so important to her. For many years she was the main care provider for her parents and Paul’s parents.
She possessed such a sweet, gentle, welcoming and caring nature, a steadfast sense of integrity, a generous spirit, and a great sense of humor. Her talents were numerous: she was a talented seamstress, she crocheted, knitted and performed other needlework, she was very artistic, she did ceramics, floral arranging, gardening, refinishing antiques, cooking, and especially loved working on projects with her beloved husband, Paul.
Betty is survived by her four children, Deborah Chaussee, Rhoda Wright, Brenda Wright, and Bill O’Rafferty; her five grandchildren, Susan Mazzarella, Allyson Harris, Shawn O’Rafferty, David O’Rafferty, and Roger Paul Chaussee; and her seven great grandchildren. She will be missed. We dearly loved her!
