Eleanore Martina Ashman passed away peacefully at the age of 101 on Monday, December 21, 2020 in Hemet, California. She was born on August 21, 1919 in Silver Lake, Minnesota to Anthony and Martina Poshek and was the youngest of eleven children. Eleanore graduated from Silver Lake High School in 1937 and from St. Mary’s School of Nursing in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1941.
She joined the United States Army Nurse Corp in 1943 and served as a surgical nurse with the rank of Lieutenant until the end of World War II in 1946. She married Dr. George Harold Ashman, a Captain in the United States Army, on January 19, 1946 at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas.
After the war George and Eleanore settled in Inglewood, California where George returned to his dental practice and they started their family. They moved to Hemet in 1956 when Dr. Ashman opened a dental practice in the neighboring city of San Jacinto. They built their family home on a ten-acre orange grove where Eleanore lived until 2013 when she moved to a local senior living residence.
George and Eleanore raised four sons, Douglas Ashman of Anza, California; James (Karen) Ashman of Hemet; Gary Ashman of Hemet; and Phillip (Kelly) Ashman of Hemet. She was the grandmother of nine, great-grandmother of eleven, and beloved aunt and friend to many.
Eleanore was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 1982; her son, Gary, in 2013 and all of her sisters and brothers.
She enjoyed serving her community as a member of Hemet Community Builders but special joy came from her thirty-four year membership in the Happy Harmoneers Choral Group.
Visitation (with covid protocols observed) will be held at Miller Jones Mortuary on January 12, 2021 from 12:00 p.m to 2:00 p.m. Private services and interment will follow at San Jacinto Valley Cemetery in San Jacinto, California. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the National Veterans Foundation (nvf.org).
