Jamila Saidah Porter-Gallien was born December 30, 1979 in Hollywood, California to Alaiyo Shobe-Porter and Roosevelt Porter. In 1980, Jamila and her mother moved to Compton, California to live with her grandmother, Marlene. In 1982, Jamila's mother married Michael Gallien, who Jamila began to call daddy. Jamila excelled in connecting with family members, friends and God. At the age of four Jamila asked Jesus to come into her heart. She was baptized acknowledging her commitment to Jesus Christ at Calvary Immanuel Church in Compton, California. In 1987, Jamila and her family moved to Moreno Valley, California. She attended Sugarhill Elementary, Vista Heights Middle School, and Canyon Springs High School. Jamila was an honor student in academics and enjoyed participating in many school activities. The activity that she enjoyed most was being a cheerleader at both Vista Heights and Canyon Springs. In October of 1994, Jamila was blessed with a baby boy, Taylor Jordon Gallien. Assuming the role of a single mom at a young age was a difficult one, but Jamila grew into it. She chose a career in nursing and became a LVN in 2000, working in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. In May, 2005 Jamila gave birth to a daughter, Mariya Hevan Pitre - Gallien and in 2008 gave birth to her second son, Kobe Elijah Gallien. Jamila wanted to spend more time with her young children so she began working for Carolyn Day Care Center. In 2010, Jamila was diagnosed with Adult Lymphoblastic Leukemia. She underwent treatment at Riverside Community Hospital, Thornton Hospital of San Diego, and City of Hope in Duarte. City of Hope is where she received a bone marrow transplant. With cancer in remission and fighting the serious side effects of treatment, she was able to attend various milestone accomplishments with her children. These included Mariya's honor student awards and Kobe's graduation from kindergarten. In June of 2015, Jamila was also able to attend the high school graduation ceremonies of her eldest son Taylor. September 11, 2015, Jamila's journey here ended and her new life in heaven with the Lord Jesus Christ began. Cherishing her memory are her children Taylor, Kobe, Mariya, brother Ahmijah Gallien and his fiancé Alea Fultz, sister Mikhala Nevels and her husband Thomas Nevels, mother Alaiyo Taylor, and her husband Rodney Taylor, dad Michael Gallien and his wife Pamela Gallien, grandparents, Fred and Marlene Skaggs, Willis and Diane Shobe, and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and her large extended family and friends.
"Jamila was a bright light and full of love. Her smile was contagious and will forever be etched in our hearts." (Raquel Smith, 2015).
