She was raised in the little town next to Larbert called Stenhousemuir (stennis-muir). Her parents were Robert and Agnes Dunn, both were 26 at Irene’s birth Irene attended Larbert High School and graduated at age 14. She enjoyed riding her bicycle and going to dances with her friends. After graduation she began training in a hair salon. At age 18, she and her father immigrated to the United States in 1952, her younger sister and mother followed in 1953. They settled in Detroit, Michigan where her father joined Ford Motor Company. Irene was hired at a local department store and worked the makeup counter while pursuing her license at beauty school Once she completed her program she started as a shampoo girl in the store’s salon. As she gained more experience she was soon cutting and styling hair, but was best known for rolling perm curlers. She had a reputation for being the fastest in Detroit. In 1956 she met Dale G. O’Neil. They married in January of 1957. They had three children, Peggy. Michael and Kathleen. They divorced after 6 years of marriage. As a single mother of three she worked hard to support her 3 children with a lot of support from her parents. When she was 31 she met and eventually married John Henault in 1965. They moved into a home in the suburbs of Detroit called Oak Park. John was a painter by trade, Irene continued her career as a hair stylist and built a large clientele. In 1967, they moved to a new home in Southgate, MI. In 1972, their son Ross Henault was born.
The family relocated to California shortly after Ross was born. Starting in Long Beach, then Westminster, CA. When Ross and his wife moved to Utah, John and Irene followed. They eventually moved back to Hemet CA after John suffered a stroke. John passed Oct. 9, 2011. Irene loved to paint pictures and displayed many in her home or gave some away. She enjoyed swimming and when her grandkids were young would often take them to the community pool for a few hours. She loved to sing and dance. Her favorite singer was Dean Martin, she played his records and sang along as she tended to her daily chores. Irene was an animal lover and almost always had a pet (dogs, cats and once a cockatiel bird) Her favorite meal was fi sh and chips as it reminded her of Scotland. Irene is survived by her four children, Peggy, Michael, Kathleen and Ross. Six grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren and 5 great great grandchildren The family would like to express a heartfelt debt of gratitude to our mother’s best friend and caregiver Karolyn Hartman. For the past seven years she has taken care of Irene and been her constant companion. We are truly blessed and thankful for all she has done.
