John Hamilton Wright, a brilliant entrepreneur, engineer, and devoted family man, boarded his cosmic train on April 27, 2026 at the age of 93. Born in Torrance, CA in 1933 to Bernice and Hamilton Wright, John’s life was defined by a remarkable mind and a love that provided a steady anchor for those he held dear.
A graduate of Hamilton High and the Northrop Aeronautical Institute, John turned his childhood dreams of business ownership into reality. He got his first job as an engineer at North American Aviation and in 1963 founded the United Computing Corporation where he developed UNIGRAPHICS - one of the most important pioneering software systems in the history of Computer-Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM). He served as President until 1979, procuring a lasting legacy in the aerospace industry through his work with McDonnell Douglas and various aeronautical projects.
In retirement he became a poet, a dedicated genealogist, and a lifelong student who took college courses into his late eighties just for the fun of it. He was also a musician, playing the trumpet from his youth well into his eighties.
John will be remembered for his unwavering loyalty, disciplined spirit, and the enduring strength of his character. He was a great creator who paved his own path and touched every heart he encountered. He was a mentor, a protector, and a storyteller who turned hikes into pirate adventures and family history into a lifelong quest.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Carolyn; his sister, Kathy; his children from his previous marriage to Patricia: Jerien, Steven, Jana, and Michael; his grandchildren Ashley, Steven, and great-grandchild Nora; and his stepchildren Joe, Caren, and step-grandson Sean, all of whom he raised as his own.
