Thomas L. Stanley Jr., 92, a nineteen-year resident of Temecula, died on March 29, 2011. Growing up in southern Virginia, he was educated as an accountant at Benjamin Franklin University, and served as a navigator on PBY air sea rescue planes during World War II. He originally settled with his wife Alfhild in Norfolk, Virginia, raising three children and pursuing a career as an accountant with the Army Corps of Engineers. In 1962, he accepted a senior position at the new Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston, Texas, where he played a central role in developing the financial management systems that supported NASA's moon landing effort. After retiring from NASA, he served as the Administrator of Business Affairs for the New York City Board of Education.
Retiring to Florida, Mr. Stanley pursued his passion for boating and fishing and also made multiple trips to visit his wife's ancestors in Norway. Moving to Temecula in 1991 to be closer to their children and grandchildren, Mr. Stanley and his wife were very active in the Temecula chapter of the Sons of Norway, making many friendships. After his wife's passing last year, Mr. Stanley moved to Santa Monica to live nearer his children.
A brother, Travis of Farmville, Virginia, children Bill, Nancy, and Janet, and three grandchildren survive Mr. Stanley. He will be laid to rest at Riverside National Cemetery on April 15, 2011 at 10 AM. A memorial service is planned for the same day at 1 PM at the Hope Lutheran Church in Temecula, (951) 676-6262.
