

Lucien Howard Smith was born to Emma Wise and Adolph Smith on August 29, 1917 in Washington D. C. He finished high school at Dunbar High in Washington D. C. He also spent many summers with his family in Culpepper, Virginia visiting his grandparents. He retired in 1983 after working 23-years in the automotive industry at General Motors (Chevrolet Gear & Axle) in Hamtramck, Michigan.
Lucien met Frieda Kohlbatz in 1952 while working in floral delivery operations. He married the love of his life in 1954. He raised and was a father to Gerald and Deirdre Smith. The couple bought a house near Marygrove College in Detroit where many family gatherings where celebrated.
In 1983 after retiring, Lucien and Frieda settled down to Sun City in Southern California. He enjoyed traveling abroad with his wife to French Polynesia, Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska and exploring the continental United States. His interests were outdoor cooking and gardening. He enjoyed social activities including Mardi Gras dances and Xavier University's annual brunch.
Lucien Smith leaves to cherish his memory: his loving wife of over 60-years Frieda Smith; his son Gerald L. Smith; his sister Janice Eason; his grandchildren Carlos A. Smith, Corey L. Smith, Gabriel Goodwin, Gerald L. Smith Jr.; his cousins Beatrice Trigg, Melissa Sykes-Short; 8-great grandchildren; and a host of other family and dear friends.
Preceding him in death are his parents Emma Wise Smith, Adolph Smith; his sisters Viola and Evelyn; his brothers Jerry and Jack; his lovely daughter Deirdre Smith Goodwin; his cousin Deidre Sykes; who are all, right now, welcoming him Home.
Lucien Howard Smith was 97-years old. He led a long and full life.
