At 19, on Iwo Jima, he received a bronze star for valor. He was one of the last living survivors of that battle and it had a profound impact on his life. Marv's book, “Once a Cowboy” was to tell his kids about war, “but war ran out” and it became a memoir. He also wrote “Victor and Connections To Pacific Spiny Lobster” and “Principles for Principals.”
After the war, he earned a BS from University of Colorado, a Masters in Ed. Admin. from San Diego University and a doctorate in Education from USC.
Marv taught chemistry, physics and math and became Vice Principal at Coronado High School in San Diego where he learned his love for skin diving from his students. He was principal of Hemet High and Palm Springs High. He was Area Superintendent for the Norwalk- La Mirada School District. Marv became a professor of Ed. Admin. at USC and then a Dept Chair at University of Idaho.
After 40 years, Marv retired to Hemet. He served as President of the Education Foundation, President of the Retired Teachers Association and served on the boards of HCA and SAGE. He spent the last 2 decades of his life devoted to Valley Restart Homeless Shelter which shows his commitment to social justice and quality of life for all individuals.
Marv will be missed by many, especially his wife, Peggy, daughters Marilyn Robertson (Curt), Lori Sloan (Jim) son Jim Nottingham (Robyn) and stepdaughter Andrea Kissack (Nancy). One daughter, Courtney Nottingham, is deceased.
If you would like to do something to honor his life, nothing would please him more than a donation to Valley Restart.
He was the kindest of men.
“My philosophy is – if you see a need for help and you can, do it!”
-Marv Nottingham
