Born on December 3, 1927 in Idaho Falls, Idaho, he was the child of Ether LeRoy and Barbara (Schmier) Glover. Growing up in Idaho, Rick answered the call of a generation, entering the United States Navy 3 days after his 17th birthday during World War II.
During his service in the Pacific Fleet from 1944 to 1948, Rick served in aviation duties that included working in aviation maintenance at Naval Auxiliary Air Station Camp Kearny (Miramar); the Kaneohe Naval Air Station in Oahu, Hawaii; and sea duty onboard the USS Antietam (CV-36) - an Essex-class aircraft carrier. Rick was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the WWII Victory Medal, and the U.S. Navy Good Conduct Medal. He exemplified the U.S. Navy values of honor, courage, and commitment his entire life.
Following the war and after completion of his active duty in 1948, Rick obtained a private pilot’s license and shortly thereafter he began a career with the Greyhound Bus Company that concluded with his retirement as a senior driver instructor.
A life member of VFW Harbour-Record Post 2266 in San Jacinto, highlights of his post-military service were the opportunity to fly on an Honor Flight to the Nation’s capital to participate in a day of honor that acknowledged his service, sacrifice, and selflessness with other veterans as a member of the greatest generation; and a private tour onboard the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt while visiting San Diego.
Above all, he was a devoted family man who loved nothing more than spending time with loved ones. Rick is survived by his loving wife Elizabeth “Liz” Glover, children, grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and his sister Donetta Simmons of Salt Lake City, Utah. Rick was predeceased by his parents and a younger sister Beverly Urso. Passing on a legacy of patriotism and love, he was proud to see the baton of Naval service carried on by the family’s next generation as two nephews had successful U.S. Navy careers.
A date for memorial services and interment has not yet been scheduled. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Rick’s memory to Honor Flight or VFW Post 2266 in San Jacinto.
