Carlos Nicolas Salazar (Nick) was born in Questa and raised in Cerro, New Mexico in the northern New Mexico mountains. He spent his youth fishing, hunting, and sheepherding with his father. At age 17 he joined the U.S. Air Force, and served in the Korean War, stationed in Japan. Upon returning from the war, he met and married his lifetime love, Fabiola Archuleta (Fabby). After marrying Fabby on April 24, 1954, Nick and Fabby moved to Hawthorne, Nevada where Nick worked as a project manager building the first CBU-55 Bomb unit for the Naval Ammunition Depot. They raised their three children in Hawthorne where Nick was active in youth sports, coaching everything from Little League to American Legion teams. To the very end, he was an avid sports fan watching Little League World Series, hockey, women’s college softball, and his favorite team, the Dodgers. As a man of faith, Nick was known as the man to go to for help, whether it was fixing or building something or counseling friends in need. His greatest joy came from his grandchildren, and when their grandson, Manuel, became terminally ill in 1981, they up-ended their own lives to provide support and be there for the family. In 1982 he retired to Buhl, Idaho. Nick enjoyed an active retired lifestyle, raising animals and gardening and exploring hunting and fishing areas in Idaho, and still helping everyone in the neighborhood. He used his woodworking skills to build everything from baby cribs to dressers for each generation as the Salazar family grew. For years, grandchildren spent their summers in Buhl, fishing, swimming, playing in the fields, picking fruit, bowling, camping, ATV riding, and simply basking in Grandpa’s love. Nick was loved by so many including numerous nieces and nephews who traveled far and wide to see their Uncle Nick throughout his life. And he tried to never miss an important event in their lives. In 2014, Nick and Fabby moved to Henderson, NV to be close to their daughter and grandchildren, whom he was surrounded by in his final years, which brought him enormous joy.
