Charles Marvin Gooden was born on March 13, 1948, in Bakersfield, California, to Walter Lee Gooden and Ophelia Pyles Gooden. The third of seven children, Charles grew up in Buttonwillow, CA, before relocating to Bakersfield. He attended Fremont Elementary, Emerson Junior High, and Bakersfield High School, later earning his GED. Charles joined the United States Army and served during the Vietnam War. After his military service, Charles moved to Northern California, where he married Annie Grear. Together, they welcomed their beloved son, Charles W. Gooden.
A true jack of all trades, Charles was known for his skilled hands. He worked as a handyman, mechanic, and home remodeler, always finding satisfaction in helping others and fixing things. In 2004, Charles settled in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he found companionship with his long-time love, Johnnie Lomax, and became an active member of the Martin Luther King Jr. Senior Center community. Charles was a sharp dresser with a lively personality. He enjoyed attending church, meeting up with friends, visiting casinos, working on puzzles, and collecting hats and African art, all of which reflected his unique style.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Ophelia Gooden, and his two youngest siblings, Carolyn and Dean Gooden. He is remembered by his son, Charles W. Gooden of Oak Park, CA; his older siblings, Jackie Boler of Bakersfield, CA, and Elmer "June" Gooden of Sacramento, CA; his younger siblings, Lillie Jackson of Cotton Plant, AR, and Gloria Knox of Bakersfield, CA; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
Charles never complained and lived life "on top of the world," leaving behind cherished memories, lasting friendships, and a legacy of selflessness, laughter, and love. He will be greatly missed and forever remembered.
