“Seeing is believing.” For many, those words simply represent a motto. But for Christopher M. Metzguer, it summarized in every way who he was. He was modest, quiet and observant, taking in everything around him and always thinking before acting. He was a realist, someone who was efficient and practical in everything he did. He was a friendly person who truly cared about those around him. He devoted himself to a career in social work and counseling so that he could make the world a better place for people.
Christopher was born on February 23, 1967 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was the son of John and Susan Metzguer and Barbara Wendel. Raised in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan, he landed in Las Vegas in 2002.
Growing up, Christopher was one of those children who didn’t need to be in the center of a whirlwind of activity. He was content to entertain himself. He loved joining in on conversations with adults and enjoyed his parents' friends. Christopher took part in a number of activities as a child. He was on the high school swim team. He was a Coronet player who loved jazz band. In his spare time he liked football, to play the organ and he and his brother Tom would create NFL helmet games.
Christopher enjoyed learning. As a teenager, he'd memorize stand up comedian routines and deliver them succintly. Chris was generally quiet in class, learning best through observation. He often showed great concentration and was competent at completing the tasks at hand. All of these talents culminated in a successful high school career. He graduated from Rochester Adams High School, Rochester Hills, Michigan, in 1985. Chris returned to college after a long hiatus and worked hard to earn exceptional grades while at the University of Phoenix. He earned his BA in Social Work in 2007. He also pursued graduate school, earning his Master's degree in 2011 in Marriage and Family Therapy.
Those who were privileged to know him well learned that he was a solid, good friend. Christopher was reluctant to generalize about people, and he based his friendships on his personal experiences. Because of this, Chris best trusted those people that he truly knew. He was concerned about how those around him felt, and he always seemed to uncover the positive side of people. He could relate to others and had the ability to see their point of view, to “walk a mile in their shoes,” as the saying goes.
Chris was a creative artist. He played and wrote music; a self-taught musician of several instruments. He was also an excellent photographer who loved chronicalling his travels throughout the United States. He loved the natural beauty of national parks, and enjoyed visiting Hawaii.
Chris was a huge sports fan and enjoyed watching his favorite teams whenever he got the opportunity. Tops on his list was watching football; he was an avid Colts fan.
