Honoring the life of Hank Shumate

Henry (Hank) R. Shumate ,90 passed away peacefully in his Las Vegas home on February 23, 2024. He is survived by his wife, Verla (Vee) M. Shumate; his two sons: Charles (Chuck) L. Shumate and Joseph M. (Misty) Shumate; two daughters: Jeanne M. (William) McJunkin and Elizabeth L. (Gene) Mercer; and several granddaughters, grandsons and great grandchildren. He is predeceased by one son, Donald R. Shumate; two brothers: Donald R. Shumate and Leslie Shumate; and one sister, Mary Elizabeth Ball.

Hank joined the US Navy and served 21 years, he was a nuclear machinist and served on several submarines throughout his career. He enjoyed serving in the military and retired as a Master chief. Hank could fix just about anything due to his sharp mechanical abilities. He was a true jack of all trades.

Hank was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, snowmobiling, boating, 4 wheeling (ATV) riding, horseback riding , and traveling. He enjoyed getting family and friends together for pig roasts and reunions often celebrating with other former Navy veterans that he had served with. He loved and enjoyed cooking and he was very good at it. He loved the game of Poker and he loved going to see the horse races and he loved Country music.

Hank was known for his sense of humor, his big smile, his kindness and generosity, and he was a caring husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.

There will be a private memorial service held for family at a later date.
