Manuel “Mel” Martinez

Manuel “Mel” Francisco Martinez was surrounded by his loving family when he passed away on Thursday, May 31, 2018, in Henderson, NV. The past several years were filled with many health obstacles, yet he endured through trial after trial until his body finally gave out. He did it on his terms! Mel was born to Jesus M. and Maria A. Martinez on October 4, 1947 in Pagosa Springs, CO. He graduated from Pagosa Springs High School in 1965 and attended Adams State College.

On August 24, 1968 Mel married Bonnie Mae Ottaway. They lived in Pagosa Springs until 1970 when they moved to Henderson, NV. From this union three sons were born, Matthew, Jerry and twin brother Joseph. When the boys were old enough to start playing sports, Mel coached them from t-ball through Little League to team ball. He enjoyed taking his family out to explore the desert, lake and mountains. Mel was an avid hunter and enjoyed taking his sons camping and hunting. He was a man of few words but when he did talk it was with a lot of wisdom. Mel liked to make people laugh and would tell what we called “dad jokes”. He liked to listen to other people tell their stories also. Most of all he loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great granddaughter.

After 45 years, Mel retired from Lhoist North America, a lime stone quarry and plant. He held several titles while working for the lime company.

Mel is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie; son and daughter-in-law, Matthew and Sondra, New York City; grandson and wife, Ryan and Adelita and great granddaughter Adrianna, Henderson, NV; grandson, Kevin, Reno, NV; granddaughter Ariel, Henderson, NV; brothers Benerito and wife Stella, Farmington NM; Joe Dan and wife Patsy, Henderson, NV; sister Cecilia Campbell, Bloomfield, NM; Sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Lucille and Keith Atkin, Henderson, NV; an aunt and numerous cousins, nephews, nieces and friends. He is proceeded in death by his sons Jerry and Joseph Martinez; parents, Jesus and Maria Martinez; brothers, Demetrio and Orlando Martinez.

Honoring his wishes, there will be no services. Burial will be private.

I met Mel and all the Martinez family while a Junior in Pagosa High School. What great & fond memories I hold from those days. Manuel, Orlando, & I had a lot of fun together, and of course Bonnie was usually there with us too.
Sad to lose such a great man so early.

I have known Mel all my life. He was one of the smartest kids in my class !

Our families were friends too. As children we use to worship together at the little country SDA Church or gather at their home with his wonderful Grandmother Fernandez.

So happy he shared his life with Bonnie, another childhood friend.

Thank God for Heaven where we will all meet again.

Love,
Marvel

I remember meeting Mel and Bonnie as a young girl. Mel was my dad's (the late Philip Bravo) best friend. I remember the times at the Martinez home and at our home in Peach Springs as being filled with laughter.
When I married and left Az. I was always glad to hear that Mel and Bonnie had been to the Rez to visit.
Mel and Bonnie were there for my daddy when we lost momma and he/they were there for us, my brothers and sis, when we lost daddy.
I remember you always Mel with a smile on your face and having a gentle loving spirit about you.
I will never for get you Muscatel Mel.
My heart goes out to Bonnie who has lost her soulmate and to the family who have lost such a loving family member.
Love 💛 and prayers 🙏 to you all.
With heartfelt sympathy I pray the Great Spirit wraps you in his loving arms and gives you strength at this most trying of times.
God Bless
