OBITUARY

Raleigh Chester McElroy Sr.

November 8, 1942January 13, 2021

Raleigh Chester McElroy, Sr. was born November 8, 1942 in Indianapolis, IN to Maxine McElroy and John McElroy, who preceded him in death.

Raleigh married Cheryl Hall White July 10, 1999 in Indianapolis, IN officiated by the late, Honorable Judge Z. Mae Jimison. They were married 21 years, 6 months and 3 days. They had a very unique fun, loving relationship filled with, laughter, excitement, prayer, dancing, family, helping others, enjoying their church, and live entertainment. Together they were role models for many as a loving man and woman of God who held hands, loved each other and enjoyed life to the fullest. They were best friends and lovingly called each other “Honey”. Raleigh had a lot of famous quotes that he lived by and shared. One was: “Live each day as though it’s your last and you will have few regrets.” He was truly a man of integrity, honesty and dignity.

He was the 2nd oldest of 6 children. He was preceded in death by his brother, Irvin Christopher Beasley and sister, Johnetta M. Garrett. Raleigh was a proud 1960 graduate of Crispus Attucks High School, in Indianapolis, IN. He worked for Eli Lilly & Company, in Indianapolis, IN for 31 years, then retired and moved to his favorite vacation spot, Las Vegas, NV in 1994 where he remained until God called him home, early Wednesday morning, January 13, 2021.

Raleigh gave his life to Christ at an early age. He became a faithful member of International Restorer of the Breach Ministries under the leadership of Overseer Ontiwaun Carter, Pastor in Las Vegas, NV. He was a member of S.A.L.T. (Seasoned Adults Laughing Together). This group met once a month having either home fellowships, enjoying music, board games, going to live concerts, dinners & plays. He loved his Pastor, First Lady and church family! He was affectionately called, Pops, Papa, Dad or Paw Paw at church. He dressed so sharp, was so smooth and cool in his suits and hats, that some called him, “Playa”…..lol.

He also sported his “Raiders” gear. He was a die hard, “Raider’s football fan”. He didn’t care if they won or loss. If they loss, he would say, “there’s always next year”. He was so excited when he saw on the news the Oakland Raiders were moving to Las Vegas and would be called the Las Vegas Raiders. He was unable to attend a game but his wife took him to the Allegiant stadium and took pictures of him standing in front of it. He was so excited!

Raleigh had a heart of pure gold. A very handsome, cool, quiet, fun, loving man of God who loved his wife, ALL of our children, grandchildren, siblings, family members and friends very much. He loved God so much that every morning when he awakened, he would say “Thank you Lord.” He enjoyed testifying about how good God had been to him to all who would listen. He also enjoyed discussing with family & friends, financial programs, sports, all genres of music and politics. He loved exercising, riding his bike into the mountains, playing and watching basketball. He was a coach for Eli Lilly Men’s team. He loved Las Vegas and enjoyed playing slots, bingo and attending various live entertainment spots with his wife where they would dance the night away almost every weekend until he became ill.

He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving, devoted wife, Cheryl Hall McElroy, Sister’s, Wanda Malone (Charles), Joyce McElroy Thompson; Brother, Ronald McElroy (Pamela). Children: Cheries Dupee, Raleigh C. McElroy, Jr. (Caprice); Albert McElroy, (Ashlee); Tosha Cheevers (John); Chona Hall Taylor, Arlondo Hall (Shetona); Sumer Norris (David); Terance Patterson, Jr. (Stephanie); Frenchiena Monroe; 23 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
