Virginia Strong Garth

December 25, 1920August 27, 2021

Virginia Strong Garth, age 100, of Henderson, Nevada passed away on Friday, August 27, 2021. She was born on Christmas day, 1920, in Madison Wisconsin, to Edwin J. Strong and Ruth Cotter Strong. Edwin had been gassed in World War I, and on the recommendation of his doctor the family moved to Los Angeles, California, for the drier climate. Her sister, Meredith, was born in Los Angeles in 1925.

Virginia graduated from Eagle Rock High School in Los Angeles and the University of Redlands in Redlands, California. At Redlands, she met Marland Long Garth, and they married in 1943 following his transfer to the Pentagon from Navy duty in the South Pacific.

After the war they returned to Southern California and lived in La Canada, where Virginia taught elementary school. When Marland was recalled to active duty for the Korean War and once again sent to Washington, DC, to serve at the Pentagon, they settled in Falls Church, Virginia, where Virginia gave birth to her son, John, in 1952.

Following the Korean War, Virginia and Marland lived in several cities as his employers transferred him, including New York City; Wilmington, Delaware; Pittsburg, Pennsylvania; Jacksonville, Florida; and San Mateo, California; spending the most time in Needham, Massachusetts. After Marland’s retirement they moved to Poway, California in 1974, where they lived until Marland’s passing in 1993. Virginia’s sister, Meredith Strong Foulke then lived with her in Poway until her passing in 2017.

Virginia was an avid golfer, an active member of the Wellesley Country Club in Massachusetts and the Stoneridge Country Club in Poway. She had a lifelong love of reading, and worked the daily newspaper crossword puzzle until well into her 90s.

Virginia is survived by her son, John Marland Garth; and nephew, Garrett Edwin Foulke. She is preceded in death by her parents: Edwin J. Strong and Ruth Cotter Strong; her husband Marland Long Garth; and her sister, Meredith Strong Foulke.

Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, September 15th, at Saint Bartholomew’s Episcopal Church, 16725 Pomerado Road, Poway, California, 92064.
