Westley L. Craven, 90, of Boulder City, passed away at Home on Sep. 9, 2013. Wes was born in Long Beach, CA on Jan. 9, 1923. His parents, John & Nora Craven preceded him. Wes graduated from Poly High in Long Beach. He worked in Todd Shipyards as a welder until he was drafted into the Army Air Corps, later the US Air Force. Wes was a tailgunner in the B17’s and was in the European Conflict for two years. When he was discharged with military honors for his service, he joined the Los Angeles Police Department becoming a member of the Police Band, as first trumpet. In addition to the Police Band, he had his own band and played for many City of LA functions and Police parties. Wes married Millie Craven and they had two boys, Scott (Dawn) Craven of Lakewood, CA and John (Randy) (Henia) Craven of Irvine, CA. Wes worked for LADP for 31 years, retired and was active with Shriners and Masonic Lodge of San Pedro and Los Angeles. Also a member of the American Legion for over 67 years, San Pedro Elks Lodge in CA and he joined the Boulder City Elks Lodge in NV. He later married Judy Craven in 1980. They’ve been together for almost 33 years. Wes’ passion was playing his horn. When they moved to NV, he joined the Las Vegas Musicians Union and played with all the various bands there. Wes also loved fishing and boating. He had his own boat and loved to be on the Colorado River at Willow Beach, AZ and lived there for 7 years, until the Park Service closed out the trailers. He then moved to Echo Bay for 3 years and eventually bought a home in Boulder City, which he loved because it looked out over Lake Mead. Wes loved music, family, Grace Community Church and all the many friends and family. Wes had one sister, Annie Key (93) who resides in Wheatland, MO who lives with her son, Eddie Foley. Wes has one grandson, Ryan Craven who lives in Anaheim, CA. Wes was a wonderful father, husband and everyone’s best friend. He truly will be missed, especially by his wife Judy. Funeral Services will be held on Sat. Sep 21, 2013 at 11 am at Grace Community Church, 1150 Wyoming St, Boulder City, NV. Burial to follow at Palm Boulder City Mausoleum, after the services. In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to Grace Community Church for their Memorial Fund in Wes’ name.
