Marie Diez Meitín, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and the cherished matriarch of her family, passed away on January 5, 2026, at the blessed age of 99, three weeks before her 100th birthday.
Marie was born on January 27, 1926, in Cuba to parents, Manuel and Paulina. From an early age, she showed strength, grace, and an enthusiasm for life that would remain with her throughout her nearly century-long journey. As a young woman in Cuba, she was active in sports during her high school years, already displaying the determination and vitality that defined her character. In November 1946, she married José Antonio García-Meitín.
The family emigrated to South Florida in November 1961. They settled in their beloved community of Hialeah.
She was a devoted wife until the passing of her husband in 1988, a loss she carried with quiet strength. Above all else, Marie was a deeply loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her family was the center of her world, and she took immense pride in each generation. She was the heart of the family—the one who held everyone together with her love, wisdom, and unwavering presence.
Marie can be described as having a love for adventure. Throughout her life, she traveled extensively, visiting many parts of the world, including Europe, South America, and China. At home, she found joy in simpler pleasures as well—working on jigsaw puzzles, savoring a glass of Crème de Vie, a traditional Cuban eggnog, and relaxing with her favorite television programs, especially telenovelas, PBS, and British crime mysteries.
A woman of deep faith, Marie was a dedicated churchgoer and an active member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Hialeah, Florida. Her faith sustained her through life’s joys and challenges, including her courageous battle with cancer, which she survived with remarkable resilience. She was truly a fighter.
In honor of her life, love and legacy, a Mass will be held in her honor at Santa Cecilia Catholic Parish, 1040 West 29 Street, Hialeah, Florida, 33012 on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at 12 Noon. A reception will be held after the Mass.
Marie is missed dearly by her many family members, friends, church family, and all those whose lives she touched with her kindness and love. She is survived by her son José (Rebecca), grandchildren Mike (Abbey), Laura and Tony. Her daughter Helena Blasewitz (Mike), grandchildren Michael (Alana), Katie (Eric) and Brian (Ashley), as well as her nine great-grandchildren. Her legacy lives on in the generations she nurtured and the countless memories she leaves behind.
May she rest in eternal peace.
