

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Nelson Steven Oramas, on May 16, 2025, in Pembroke Pines, Florida, at the age of 71. Nelson was born on August 3, 1953 and the only son of his parents, Arturo and Josefina Oramas, in Havana Cuba.
Nelson arrived in Miami, Florida at the age of eight from Cuba with his family and spent the next 63 years changing the course of his family’s legacy and made all those that loved him very proud.
Nelson joined the then Metro-Dade Police Department in 1974 and served as a public servant, leader and mentor to the community and citizens of Miami-Dade for 31 years.
He spent his career working various assignments as he rose through the ranks, working in special events, community affairs, planning and management, operations and administration. His diversified professional career allowed him incredible opportunities making lasting impact within the police department and the community. One of those assignments was as a technical advisor on behalf of the Metro-Dade Police Department working many special projects, movies and television shows that were filmed in the greater Miami area.
In 1985, “Nelly” made his professional acting debut on the TV show Miami Vice. Nelson played Bomb Squad Specialist Sam in the episode “Smuggler’s Blues” where he disarmed the explosive device tied to Trudy! Nelson created lifelong friends and family wherever he went; to know him was to love him.
Nelson ultimately retired as Chief of Police from Miami-Dade Police Department and went on to continue to serve the community as Assistant Director of Security and Safety for the Miami-Dade Aviation Department, including the Miami International Airport and Assistant Director of Security and Enforcement for the Port of Miami.
Nelson lived a life full of adventure and generosity; he could make a room fill with laughter and was an incredible storyteller. Nelson loved being out on the water, playing a round of golf and watching sports. He was a lifelong Miami Dolphins fan and a lover of science fiction, old westerns and wartime movies.
Nelson is survived by his ex-wife Rita Banner, also a retired Major with Miami-Dade Police Department, his two daughters, Ashley Oramas and Kristyn Pallisso, son-in-law Jorge Pallisso, two grandchildren Logan and Cade and two granddogs Hunter and Indi.
In honor of his life, love & legacy, a Visitation for Nelson will be held on Saturday, May 31, 2025 at Caballero Rivero Hialeah Funeral Home, 373 West 9 Street, Hialeah, Florida 33010 from 10:00 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. At 1:00 P.M., a Prayer Service will be held in the Chapel in remembrance of Nelson.
