

Ofelia Elena Muniz, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away on September 9, 2025, at the age of 93. Born in Holguin, Cuba on September 27, 1931, Ofelia was a strong, intelligent, funny and incredibly resilient woman who lived life to the fullest. Aside from her family, her passions were going to the beach, reading, dancing, travelling and getting together with friends. Their parties were memorable.
Ofelia earned a doctorate in Chemistry from the University of Havana in Cuba. She married Arturo, ‘el Gallego’, on January 8th, 1958 who preceded her in death. After leaving Cuba in 1962, her young family went to Spain and then moved to Miami, Florida in 1964. Ofelia worked as a Research Professor of Biochemistry for the University of Miami School of Medicine in the Arthritis division from 1965 to 1994. She came to learn how to read and speak English quite fluently and would read novels only in English as well as only watch TV shows in English. She was a woman of great faith.
She is survived by her son, Arturo Jose (Mayra) and daughter Elena (Sanjay) as well as grandchildren Vijay (Alexis), Jason, Emily (Brian) and Natalie. She is also survived by five great-grandchildren: Penelope, Lucy, Liv, Josie and Grayson.
Visitation will be held at Caballero Rivero Hialeah, located at 373 W 9 Street, Hialeah, FL 33010, on September 14, 2025, from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm.
A Funeral Mass will take place at St John the Apostle Catholic Parish Miami, 475 E 4th St, Hialeah, FL 33010, on September 15, 2025, from 10:30 am to 11:30 am.
The Committal Service will follow at Our Lady of Mercy Cemetery, 11411 NW 25th St, Doral, FL 33172, on September 15, 2025, from 1:00 pm to 1:30 pm.
Ofelia's life was a testament to the power of resilience and faithfulness, and she will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched.
