CONOVER – Alvin Lee Murphy passed away on March 23, 2023 at Catawba Valley Medical Center after a brief illness.
Alvin was born on March 9, 1941 in Catawba County to the late Carlos Coleman and Ethel Bowman Murphy. He was an avid turkey and deer hunter. Alvin played softball in his younger years. He enjoyed playing golf. Alvin was an upholsterer by trade. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren and great-grandchildren sporting events. Alvin was an active member of Miller’s Lutheran Church and served on many committees. He was known as the “Candy man” to the congregation. Alvin was active with the youth when his grandchildren were members. He loved woodworking and making things to give to friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Jack Murphy, Johnny Murphy and Tommy Murphy.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 60 years, LaRue Bolick Murphy; daughters, Sabrina McCloy and husband John of Hickory, Lydia Gilbert and partner Chad Liley of Hickory; sons, Jonathan Murphy of Conover, Derek and wife Nita of Hickory; grandchildren, Dr. Stephen McCloy and wife Amanda of Spartanburg, SC, Caitlyn McCloy of Hickory, Ian McCloy of Hickory, Nathan Gilbert and wife Ashley of Claremont, Breanna Murphy of Conover, Tate Bumgarner of Hickory; great-grandchildren, Elly McCloy, Rowan McCloy of Spartanburg, SC, Aria Gilbert, Alaina Gilbert of Claremont, Aedan McCloy of Hickory; sister, Majorie Abernathy and husband Gary of Hickory and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2023 at 2 PM at Miller’s Lutheran Church with Rev. Todd Cook and Vicar Rebecca Foster officiating.
The family will receive friends after the service at 3 PM in the fellowship hall.
