Arlene Carol (Wass) McGinnis

Arlene Carol Wass McGinnis, 87, passed away on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at Trinity Village in Hickory NC. She was born on June 20, 1931 to the late Dewey S. Wass and Dorsie Hamrick Wass in Sutton, West Virginia. Her formative years were in Harrisville, WV where she met the love of her life, John Robert (Bob) McGinnis. They were married in 1951 and settled in Charleston, WV. Later they moved to Beckley, WV where they raised their two children, Kit and Mark. She worked as a claims representative for the Social Security Administration for 21 years. In 1991 she moved to Hickory, NC where she became an active member of First United Methodist Church. Bird watching was a favorite pastime and her love of animals led her to be a supporter of the Humane Society. She enjoyed duplicate bridge and formed many friendships at the bridge table. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John Robert “Bob” McGinnis; brother, William Wass; and sister, Margaret Wilson. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Kathryn McDonald and husband Norman of Hickory; son, Mark McGinnis and wife Diane of Hickory; granddaughters, Megan McDonald O’Neill and husband Ryan of Hickory, Kristin McGinnis Blonk and husband Brian of Raleigh, Amy McGinnis of Raleigh; grandsons, Brent McDonald and wife Michelle of Hickory, Ian McDonald and wife Janelle of Hickory, Jonathan McGinnis and wife Julie of Raleigh; great granddaughter, Aubrey O’Neill of Hickory; sister, Patricia Wass Ploehn of Dallas, TX, and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held on Sunday, August 26, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. in the Chapel of First United Methodist Church in Hickory. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. Pastor Paul Christy will be officiating the service. Burial will take place at a later date in the cemetery of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows in Harrisville, WV. The family would like to thank all the staff of Kingston Residence and Trinity Village for their years of loving care.
