Hickory - Carmen Herman Whitener, 95, of Mountain View went home to be with her Lord Saturday May 3, 2014 at Catawba Regional Hospice in Newton. She was born February 8, 1919 in Catawba County to the late Sam and Myrtle Herman. She was a member of Mountain Grove Baptist Church in Mtn. View where she has served as Sunbeam leader, taught Bible School and was active in WMU. She worked for many years at Busy Beaver Day Care. Carmen served her community many years as a member of the Mtn. View Volunteer Fire Dept. Auxiliary where she received the “Lady of the Year” award for Catawba County in 1991. The Mtn. View Volunteer Firemen presented her with an “Honorary Firemen Award” in 1977 for service in helping to notify firefighters to their call of duty.Along with her parents she is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years Forest B. Whitener; Sisters, Alice Overcash, Margaret Yoder, and Joyce Bumgarner; brothers Ed Herman, Howard Herman, Paul Herman and Sam Herman, and 1 Great-Grandchild. Survivors include 3 daughters, Gail Jones and husband Jerry, Sue Ward and husband Errol of Hickory, Kay DelVechio-Brown and husband Neil of Statesville; 1 granddaughter Wanda Jones of Hickory; 7 grandsons; Tim Jones and wife Cathy B. , Jeff Jones and wife Cathy C. , Kirk Ward and wife Angie , Chuck Ward and wife Melissa and Jody DelVechio and wife Amber of Hickory. Kevin Ward and wife Krista of Newton, Chad DelVechio and wife Michelle of Florence SC. ; 15 Great- Grandchildren; and 2 Great-Great-Grand-children; and 1 sister Ruth Lawter of Conover, and numerous nieces and nephews.The family would like to thank Gentiva, Life Transitions, Hospice, and all the loving caregivers involved in the care of our Mother/Grandmother in the past four years.The family will receive friends on Wednesday May 7, 2014 from 1:30 PM until 2:45 PM at Mountain Grove Baptist Church in Mtn View.The funeral will be conducted on Wednesday May 7th, 2014 at 3:00 PM At Mountain Grove Baptist Church, in Mtn. View with Dr. Stephen E. Loftis and Reverend Kenneth Bryant officiating.Burial will be in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Honorary Pallbearers will be the Caregivers who gave her such loving care over the past few years and present and past members of the Mtn. View Volunteer Fire Dept.
