Hickory- Carrie Lee Houser Foster left this world on April 29, 2015 to start her renewed and eternal life with her Lord and Savior. She fought dementia and Alzheimer’s disease in her later years, but those were only bumps in the road to her redemption. Carrie Lee lived and led a hard-working, joyful, honest and caring life full of friends and family to share with along the way.
Carrie Lee was born in Vale, Lincoln County, NC and is the daughter of the late Thomas Gaston and Jettie Mae Houser. Living in Hickory and the surrounding areas for almost her entire life, Carrie Lee worked hard and retired as a sock seamstress at Jobst in Hildebran, NC. She raised two beautiful daughters, Doris and Gwen, and loved spending time with her extended family.
She loved the Lord and her church, Messiah Lutheran, which she faithfully attended for 54 years. For many of those years, she was a member of the church choir. Even in her years of failing health, her faith never waivered.
Carrie Lee was very active in her retirement years. She travelled with her daughters to destinations all over the United States and Europe. She loved working in her garden, growing vegetables for her family and friends, and canning what she grew so that she could enjoy the fruits of her labor all year long. She was famous for her homemade biscuits and gravy, fried okra, creamed rice and sourdough breads. In her spare time, Carrie Lee enjoyed creating intricate crocheted cloths, doilies and bedspreads for others to enjoy.
Carrie Lee was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Thomas Gene Houser, and sisters, Nellie Prue Gilbert, Edna Naomi Benfield, and Eula Kate Wilson. She leaves behind her daughter, Doris Marcovechio and husband Tony; daughter Gwen Elmore and husband Charles; grandson, Chris Elmore and wife Laura; grandson, Jeff Elmore; great-grandson, Caleb Elmore; and great-granddaughter, Hannah Elmore.
