

Clyde Edward Smith Jr. passed away on December 5, 2016. He was born to Clyde Edward Smith Sr. and Emily Silvia Smith, September 21, 1937 in Hickory, North Carolina. Clyde graduated from Hickory High School in 1955. He served 4 years in the US Air Force Intelligence Services, attending Syracuse University in New York for language studies. He retired from the City of Shelby as manager of Public Utilities. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother-in-law Jack S. Powell; and niece Jackie Sue Powell. He is survived by his 3 children; a son Barry Edward Smith (wife Vivian), 2 daughters Crystal Jeanette Smith, Maria Anne Smith and their mother, Iris Styers Smith. Also surviving are 3 grandchildren; Morgan Smith Warren, Caleb Edward Smith, (their mother Toni Smith) and Brandon Tilmon Mundy (his mother Maria Smith). Marissa Fernandez Ross (her mother Vivian E. Smith). He is survived by 2 sisters; Patsy Smith Powell and Deborah Smith Hefner (husband Tommy Hefner) and nieces and nephews. Clyde was a member of Christ Lutheran Church. He followed Billy Graham’s televised services and enjoyed reading his literature. A private military memorial service will be held at the request of the family.
