I was sorry to hear of Daisy's passing.  She is definitely in Heaven. We went to the same church. The deacons were given a list of families that they were responsible for and she was my husband's. Daisy and I also were in the GROW group together. We had a lot of fun and laughter doing our letters to visitors. I've missed Daisy ever since she went to assisted living. Jackie and I visited her there. She was one of the sweetest ladies. I am honored to have known her and been her friend too. I'm glad she had such wonderful children.

Daisy Edwards Cooper Peterson

Part 1
A baby girl was born March 5th 1938 to Mose and Geniva “Lee” Edwards.  This baby girl was their fourth child after her sisters Rettie, Mary, and brother RC.  Seventeen days later this baby girl’s Mom, passed away at a young age leaving her in true need.  After some discussion between many relatives, it was decided that Mose’ sister and her family would raise this baby girl like their own.  At some time during this process this baby girl was given the name Daisy, named after her Aunt who had now become her Mom.  From this time on they would be called “Big” Daisy, and “Little” Daisy, but to three of us, just Mom.

Jeff and Daisy Cooper already had three children, Calvin, Glen, and Flora.  After Mom came three more, Volena, Walter, and Linda Jo.  This Uncle, Aunt, and 6 cousins became Daddy, Mommy, and Brothers and Sisters to Mom, and she would “set you straight” if you ever suggested otherwise.  Mom spoke this boldly because of how she was “raised” by this loving family as never anything different than Daughter, and Sister.

Gaining this new family was all an addition for Mom, never a subtraction.  She knew from an early age that she had two living and loving dads, a deceased, and a living mom, and not one, but two sets of equally loving and loved siblings …. after all the two families were just a few “hollars” apart.

Mose eventually remarried and surprise …. Mom got a third set of brothers and sisters who she loved very much.  Carolyn, JD, Paulette, Sherrill, Donnie, Elvis, Danny, Treva, and Randy.  So if you are counting with me, that truly is 10 brothers and 8 sisters for Mom, and she couldn’t have been happier about it.

Part 2

In 1956 Mom and the Cooper family moved from Coopers Branch near Poplar NC “i.e. the mountains” to the Gaston/Lincoln area for better work opportunities.  Soon after that Mom moved back to the mountains and married our Dad.  Dallas and Daisy were married 39 years and had three children, Sheila, Roger, and Richie.  Grand children are a blessing, and Mom was blessed with three, Brandon, Derrick, and Kourtney.  

In addition to being a devoted wife and loving Mom and always raising a large home garden, Mom had a wide variety of short careers.  She was a Sewer, a Florist, a School Cafeteria Manager, she worked many years at Wellborn’s, - a Mens Store doing Sales and Alterations, she became a Siecor Buffering Operator – which I must admit surprised me that Mom in her mid-50s could learn how to run a sophisticated manufacturing line.  I should have known by then never to underestimate Mom, maybe she thought about it as a big sewing machine.  She worked at Siecor long enough to earn retirement.  After retirement Mom worked several years part-time at Belk’s doing alterations.  Through all of her short careers, Mom was always a seamstress, and one of the best.  Ladies who could actually sew – would bring sewing jobs to Mom.  Mom would save the money from this work in a jar, she called it her “sewing money”.

During retirement Mom was blessed having already been a member of a wonderful church - Mtn View Baptist where she spent time worshipping and fellowshipping with other believers.  Mom was fortunate and wise enough to spend as much of her retirement possible traveling around the US.  Whether it was a church group or with Christian Tours, she traveled with friends; and made new friends on trips to do further travels with.  Trips like ...

Part 3

... an Alaskan Cruise including a Helicopter ride over a glacier, the Grand Canyon and other Southwest sites.  Northwest sites like Seattle, Oregon, Mt Hood, Mt St Helen, and Branson MO.  San Francisco with its Golden Gate, Niagara Falls, and Washington DC.  Looking over Mom’s photos with my brother and sister made us appreciate how truly blessed Mom’s retirement years were.  The memories from these trips helped sustain Mom after her traveling days were over, she loved to tell you “where she got to go to”.

Mom was a people person and always made friends – true friends easily.  She loved being around people.  She loved hosting friends for her annual Christmas gathering at her home in Brickfield.  She took every opportunity to be with family like the annual Cooper Cove Day, Christmas at Walters, and Decoration at Bennet Cemetery where so many loved ones were laid to rest.

Mom was a planner, and in 2013 she decided it was time to sell her home and become a Resident at Abernethy Laurels.  After all, there were more people to meet.  We didn’t fully realize at the time, just what a blessing this decision would be.  She loved her apartment in the Village, and her many new friends including Nancy, Terry, and Chris who were in her apartment circle.  Eventually Mom needed a little help to stay independent.  Mom always thought of the CNAs that helped her on some days – as friends – because that is how Mom saw people.

Mom was one of the Sweetest people you could ever know.  I say this not just because I’m her son, but because I have been told that by people my entire life.  My high school classmates that knew her, Siecor coworkers who knew us both, neighbors, friends, family.  Anyone I ever met that had met Mom, would tell me how much they loved Mom, and how Sweet she was.

As Mom’s body began to abandon her, as she fought through chronic pain, lost most of her mobility, and was aware that her mental abilities were fading, she became even sweeter.  When you walked into her room for a visit, she would smile and make you feel the hero just for visiting her.  CNAs and Nurses would stop us in the hall to tell us how much they loved Mom.  It was a CNA who became Moms friend, who later became a Nurse, who was one of Moms main caregivers in the last years, and who was with her on her last morning here on earth.  Katie, we will be forever grateful for you and others at Abernethy Laurels.

My sister journaled this:
‘We will miss her.  We will never forget all our experiences with her and her constant presence in who we are.  But more than anything, we celebrate and cherish knowing she has found ultimate peace and contentment with Jesus, for all time through eternity.’

Mom may have had 2 sets of parents, 10 brothers, 8 sisters, 3 children, 3 grandchildren, and 100s of friends.  But she only had 1 husband – she would often say she married for life, and she lived that.  And she only had 1 Savior, the Savior Jesus Christ who she is with now.  She is not with Him because she was sweet or a good person; in fact on her own merits she was not qualified - no one is.  She is with Him because she placed the fate of her eternal soul in His hands, trusting that Jesus’s sacrifice on the cross was meant for her, that Jesus paid a debt He did not owe, for we who owe a debt that we cannot pay, a sin debt.  I will see Mom again, and so will ever true Believer in this room.  If you do not have that eternal assurance that Mom had, if you have not yet asked Jesus to be your friend and Savior, you can still do so.  Mom would plead with you if she could.  At your first opportunity please talk with a Pastor, or someone you can tell has that relationship with Christ.

Jesus waits for you, and Mom waits with Him ...

I remember your mother as such a sweet lady. She always welcomed me with kindness and a smile.  Thinking of you today and wishing you peace.

I have very fond memories of Daisy, as we worked together for several years at Wellborn’s Clothing Store in Burnsville. Such a sweet, friendly, & fun lady-treated me like one of her kids.  May God bless your family with His peace.
