

Born Nov. 29, 1932, in Caldwell County, he was the son of the late Carroll Ezra Sigmon and Jettie Hill Setser Sigmon. Darrell was a 1951 graduate of Lenoir High School and a 1965 graduate of NC State University, where he received a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. He was a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Hickory, and was the former owner and operator of Sigmon Automotive in Hickory, and also Red Top Storhaus (Mini Warehouse Facility) in Caldwell County. His passion was restoring and maintaining Mercedes-Benz vehicles and he had been a member of the Mercedes-Benz Club of America since 1965. Darrell won multiple awards in driving events around the country sponsored by the Mercedes-Benz Club of America. He served in the NC National Guard for over 30 years, where he was a helicopter pilot and retired with the rank of Major.
In addition to his parents, Darrell was preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn S. Pratt.
Darrell is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carolyn Robbins Sigmon of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Paul Albrecht of Hillsborough; son, David Neil Sigmon of Hickory; sister and brother-in-law, Janice and Marvin Shoemake of Bossier City, Louisiana; brother, Bernard Sigmon of Gilbert, Ariz.; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 16, at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Hickory, with the Rev. Ryan Ray and Deacon Heather Langan officiating. A reception for family and friends will be held in the Heritage Hall at the church following the service. A private committal service for family will be held at the columbarium at the church.
