HICKORY – Dean Poteat, 83 of Hickory went home to be with the Lord on September 2, 2025.
Born on March 2, 1942 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Russell Poteat and Bonnie Ingle Shook. Dean owned and operated Poteat’s Lock and Key for over 50 years, it was his life’s passion. He never retired and worked until Jesus called him home to rest. Dean was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend to all who knew him. Dean enjoyed watching Westerns and was an avid antique collector. He attended Spencer Road Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Judy Poteat, son, Randy Poteat, brother, Gerald Poteat, and sister, Kathy Brown.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Eric Poteat and wife Julia, Angela Townsend and husband Donald, Sharon Aiken and husband Bradley, Judy (Cissie) Killian; step-daughter, Tammy Harris and husband Bill; grandchildren, Ashlyn Poteat, Kelly Lail and wife Jennifer, Clyde (June) Lail, Nicholas Frenceschini and wife Valerie, Brandon Townsend and wife Dana, and Peyton Wheeler; great-grandchildren, Kody Lail, Jaden Lail, Tyler Lail, Sarah Lail, Jasmine Townsend, Ezra Townsend and a number of other family members.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday September 13, 2025 at 12 PM at Spencer Road Baptist Church with Pastor Gerald Robinette officiating.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11 AM – 12 PM at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Spencer Road Baptist Church.
