Doris Aileen Hughes

Doris Aileen Young Hughes, 92 of Hickory, passed away June 18, 2026, at Frye Regional Medical Center. She was born in Marion, NC to the late Claude Jennings Young and Vonnie Mae Biggerstaff Young. Doris is also preceded in death by her husband of 64 years Harold Dean Hughes and sister, Elva Young Boyd.

Doris was a wonderful and devoted daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend who was loved and admired by all.

After graduating from Marion High School, Doris moved to Washington, DC and worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. After moving to Hickory, Doris worked in the accounting department at Corning for many years where she retired. She is also a long-time member of Highland United Methodist Church in Hickory. Doris enjoyed spending time with her family, cooking and playing word games on her phone. She loved her trips to the beach.

Doris is survived by her son, Larry Dean Hughes and wife Nancy, daughter, Rebecca H. Hardy and husband Charles, brother Ron Young and wife Ann Harkey, five grandchildren; Erin H. Cox and husband Ryan, Megan H. Kilby and husband Brent, Dr. Samuel K. Hughes and wife Elizabeth, Nicole H. Simmons and husband Taylor, Rachel H. Johnson and husband Avery and six great grandchildren.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Highland United Methodist Church on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 11:00 am with the Reverend Alan Gaylord and Reverend Jim Church officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 –11:00 am prior to the service. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Hickory.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to the We Care Fund, c/o Highland United Methodist Church, 1020 12th Street, Place NE, Hickory, NC 28601.
