Emily Mae Munn, born to John and Dorothy Munn of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho January 31st 1930, youngest of seven children all of whom preceded her in death: Donald, John, Isabelle, Jeanette, Phyllis, and Francis. The family moved to Potlatch Idaho in 1935. Mom made her choice to serve God as a young girl and served Him throughout her life with the grace and strength He gave to her willing heart.
Mother met Dad while he was attending missions in Pullman Washington. Something attracted Dad to her and her to Dad. Before they married Dad moved to Iowa City/Cedar Rapids Iowa where he student taught. Mom learned enough braille to write some to him as well as his typed letters to her, and they had some contact by telephone. Mom worked after finishing high school at Richland Hanford Works in Washington before she and Dad were married June 15th 1949.
They lived in Cedar Rapids Iowa their first year before they moved to San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1950 where Dad taught English and linguistics at UPR. They lived in Puerto Rico 17 years, interspersed with living in Ann Arbor Michigan a year and Boston Massachusetts a year where Dad studied for his doctorate. The family moved to NY in 1967 where Dad taught at SUNY New Paltz. Mother and Dad downsized from their home of 40 years and moved to Hickory, NC in 2007. Dad passed away after a short illness of pneumonia six weeks after moving at 85 years of age.
Mother & Dad led a full, rich life, united in faith and enjoyed many privileges. They traveled to Japan, Korea, Russia, Kazakhstan, Latvia, India, Australia, New Zealand and other places. Always their joy was fellowship with those of like faith, abroad and at home. Puerto Rico remained dear to them all their days.
They enjoyed birding, their outings into nature, playing Scrabble, and their yard among other things. They loved having their children and grandchildren come home or visiting them. They loved having the workers and friends. Mom is remembered for her gentle, gracious spirit and loving interest in others. She served our Dad all their 58 years of marriage, she was his eyes to help him in his work and appreciate what she saw. He served her, giving her earthly security and support all their days.
We children are so thankful for their lives. Mother will be remembered by a host of friends besides her loving family.
Emily is survived by three sons and one daugher: Timothy & Barbara Jones of Matthews NC, Steven & Brenda Jones of Orford, NH, Roger & Connie Jones of Hickory, NC and Virginia Jones of Kelso, WA; three grandsons and three granddaughters, and three great-granddaughters, as well as nieces and nephews.
