peacefully on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at 4:05 a.m., surrounded by
those who loved him. He passed after a long and courageous battle with COPD and lung cancer. He is now reunited with his beloved wife, Eula M. Shortridge, with whom he shared more than five decades of marriage.
Born on December 26, 1944, in Grundy, Virginia, Grady spent his life
devoted to his family, his work, and the values he held dear. He was a retired coal miner known for his quiet strength, generous heart, and willingness to help others. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, loved his dogs, and treasured the simple moments shared with his family and friends. His kindness, humility, and gentle spirit left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.
Grady is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 54 years, Eula Mae Shortridge; his daughters, Christina Shortridge and Janet Leigh
Lingerfelt; and his parents.
He is survived by his son, Darrell Shortridge of Elon, North Carolina;
his son-in-law, Danny Lingerfelt of Hickory, North Carolina; Danny's
children and great-grandchildren; extended family members; and many dear friends.
During his final days, Grady was lovingly cared for in Danny's home,
where he was surrounded by family, comfort, and the love of those
closest to him. A special expression of gratitude is extended to Rama and Laya, whose presence, compassion, and comforting care brought peace to Grady during his final hours.
Grady was a man of deep faith. After studying the Bible with Jehovah's Witnesses, he dedicated his life to Jehovah through baptism. His faith gave him strength throughout life's challenges, and he looked forward to the Bible's promises found at John 5:28, 29 and Revelation 21:3, 4, when death, pain, and suffering will be no more and loved ones will be reunited under God's Kingdom.
Grady will be laid to rest beside his beloved wife, Eula, at Catawba
Memorial Park in Hickory, North Carolina.
The family extends its sincere gratitude to the physicians, nurses,
hospice staff, and caregivers who provided compassionate care and
comfort during Grady's final days, as well as to everyone who offered prayers, love, and support.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, August 2, 2026,
at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel of Catawba Memorial Park, Funerals &
Cremations, located at 3060 U.S. Highway 70 SE, Hickory, NC 28602 with Pastor Gregory Clark Hames officiating.
