Gregory Denver Minton, 54, of Hickory, North Carolina, passed away on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at Carolina Caring, after a valiant battle with cancer. He passed peacefully, held in the arms and love of his family.
Born November 20, 1971, at Fort Bragg, Greg was the son of Richard Sparrow and Margie Marie Minton (née Collier). He was also raised by Denver Gail Minton.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Sparrow, Denver Gail Minton, and Margie Marie Minton (née Collier); and his brothers, Anthony Young and Benjamin Young.
He is survived by his loving wife, Laura Minton (née Spahn); his son, Ezekiel Minton; his daughter, Lillian Minton; his brothers, Bradley Young and Michael Young (Rachel Young); his sister, Margie Denise McMahon (Scott McMahon); his beloved dog, Todd; and many extended family members and friends who loved him.
Greg served proudly in the United States Army and remained especially proud of his time with the Rakkasans and the Berlin Brigade. His service was an experience that stayed with him throughout his life and reflected his deep love of history and country.
Above all, Greg loved his family. He was a devoted and loyal husband to Laura, his wife of 22 years, and from the time he met her, his heart was fully hers. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and countless memories, especially through their shared love of Disney. What began as trips together when they met in college became years of family memories and friendships made in the place that held so much joy for them.
Greg was a deeply devoted father to his children, Lillian and Ezekiel. He gave them the best of himself through his time, patience, understanding, and selflessness. As a stay-at-home dad, he poured his life into his children, always talking with them, listening to them, and loving them with quiet constancy. He was proud of them beyond measure.
Greg had a childlike sense of wonder that never left him. He loved Disney, not just as a place, but for the imagination and magic it represented. He had an extensive Lego collection, enjoyed learning about cars, loved history and visiting historical battlefields, and could still be moved by a beautiful cloud or the power of a good thunderstorm. He noticed wonder in the world, and that wonder illuminated him.
A private funeral Mass will be held at St. Aloysius Catholic Church for immediate family and invited guests. A Celebration of Greg's life, open to all family and friends will be held on Friday, July 31, 2026, from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Red Cedar Farm, 5775 Charlie Little Road, Granite Falls, NC 28630.
