

He was born on January 7, 1951 to the late, Roy Hughes and Julie McMahan Hughes in Yancey County. Jackie coached little league baseball for 18 years and loved seeing his athletes go on to play college and major league baseball. He worked for 25 years in the furniture industry and after retirement he bought a car lot and became a successful car dealer. Most importantly, Jackie’s biggest accomplishment in life was being a husband, father, and grandfather.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Maryanne Bruce.
Survivors include his best friend and wife of 45 years, Janie Hughes; son, Jason Hughes and wife Jennifer of Mooresville; daughter, Jessica Hughes Wagner and husband Dr. Nick Wagner of Austin, TX; grandchildren, Jenavieve Hughes, Eleanor Wagner; sisters, Brenda Silver, Jeanette Silver; brothers, Johnny Hughes and wife Betty, Bud Hughes and wife Patsy, Tim Hughes and wife Margaret; brother-in-law, Ron Workman; sister-in-law, Georgette Workman; friends and colleagues, Billy Frye and Randy Houston; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A receiving of friends will be held on Monday, April 19, 2021 from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Hickory Funeral Home.
