

Herman was born March 29, 1923 in Seneca, S. C. to the late Noah Mitchell and Dessie Maria Crompton Cater.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters: Mildred Ellenburg and Bernice Jones.
He was a member of West Hickory Baptist Church, owner and operator of Cater Radio & TV Sales & Service., member of The Exchange Club of Hickory, graduate of Lenoir Rhyne College and served in the US Marine Corp during WW II and participated in occupation of Iwo Jima.
Surviving are his wife, Nadine Smith Cater of the home, son: Jim Cater, Jr. and wife Lynn of Newton, daughters: Gwen Abercombie and husband, Robert, Jr., of N. Myrtle Beach, SC and Grace Griffin and husband Dennis of Hickory, grandsons: Kirk Cater of Conover and Jeff Jenkins of Hickory, granddaughters: Ashley Greene and husband Jon of Charlotte, Teresa Nichols and Emily Jenkins both of Icard, sisters: Helen Cater of Hickory and Edith Addison of Toccoa, GA.
A graveside service will be Saturday, December 18, at 10:00 A. M. at Catawba Memorial Park with Reverend Scott Frady officiating. Military rites will be conducted by The Catawba Valley U. S. Marine Corps League.
A memorial service will follow Saturday at 11:00 A. M. at West Hickory Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends at the church following the memorial service.
