CONOVER---James “Ben” Benjamin Spencer, 81, passed away February 11, 2015 at Catawba Regional Hospice. Ben was born January 11, 1934 in Catawba Co. to the late Horace and Vassie Black Spencer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Maxine Spencer Petherbridge.
He was a lifelong member of St. Stephens Lutheran Church, Mo. Synod. He retired as a security guard for Burns Security and, also, worked for many years as the custodian for Augustana Lutheran Church. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy and served during the Korean War. Surviving are his sister, Rebecca Spencer Hunter, of Conover, and nine nieces and nephews and their families; Lynn Petherbridge Trautwein, Ann Petherbridge, Jean Petherbridge, Mark Petherbridge, Kathy Petherbridge McGeehan, Karen Petherbridge, Tim Hunter, Leslie Hunter Benfield, and Neil Hunter. Services will be Sunday, Feb. 22, at 3:00 P.M. at St. Stephens Lutheran Church, Mo. Synod with Pastor David Guelzow officiating. The family will receive friends Sunday, Feb. 22, from 2:00 – 3:00 P.M. at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Stephens Lutheran Church, Mo.
