He was born July 16, 1940. J.D. was a member of the first class to attend four years of high school at and graduate from Fred T. Foard High School in 1958. J.D. had been a long-distance truck driver. He enjoyed owning his own truck and riding the road. Confined to his home in recent years, J.D. enjoyed watching old westerns and stock car races, and playing with his beloved pet “Gizzy”.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years Bon Jou Dawn Burris Hefner, they were married June 6, 1959; his two sons David Lee Hefner (Pat) of Lenoir, Terry Wayne Hefner (Natalie) of Taylorsville; four grandchildren, Caitlin Hefner Davis (Trevor) of Raleigh, Gage Hefner (Breeanna) and great-grandson Samuel of Taylorsville, Julie Jackson of Lenoir, Wendy Dellinger (Joe) of Lenoir; two sisters, Myra Hefner of Vero Beach, Fl., Denise Coulter-Bost (Rodney) of Newton; a niece Billie Jo Beuttell (Bill) of Newland and a nephew Mike Lingerfelt (Jane) of Auburndale,Fl and “adopted son” Ray Barger (Debra) of Newton.
He was preceded in death by his father Lawrence T. Hefner, mother and stepfather, Callie Lail Coulter and David E. Coulter, an infant brother Harvey Lee Hefner, and stepgrandson Eric Jackson.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Monday, July 16, 2018 at 5 pm at Catawba Funeral Home. The family will receive friends after the service.
