Johnny William Lynn, 80, of Hickory, passed away on Tuesday, August 7, 2018 at Trinity Village in Hickory. Born May 10, 1938 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late Harvey Lynn and Lucille Abigale Cline Lynn. A veteran of the US Air Force, he was a member of the Royal Chapel Church of God. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Mark Allen Lynn.

Johnny is survived by his wife of 26 years, Kay Dickinson Lynn of Hickory; children, Kim Austin of Hickory; Terry and Cindy Benfield, Brad and Sharon Benfield, Jody Benfield; sister, Elizabeth Ficklin of Forest City; grandchildren, River Allen Austin, Daniel, Sara McCall, Matthew, Kayla, Lindsey, Katherine, Jazmine, April, and Samurel Benfield, Ana Austin, and Josh and Stevie Lynn Jungfermon; and great-grandchildren, Braxten and Rowen Benfield.

Loved by many and known as “Papaw Johnny”, he served his country in the US Air Force, supported the American Red Cross with numerous donations and served as President of his local Lion’s Club. Papaw loved music, walking and gardening of plants and flowers. He loved the beauty of the earth and landscaped his home and church grounds with great love and detail. He shared the word of God with others by reading scripture, teaching Sunday School and serving on the council in his church for many years. Papaw loved Mamaw Kay and his children. His grandchildren were the light of his life. We are so thankful that Papaw loved Jesus and that we will see him again.

The family expresses deep gratitude to those who loved and cared for Johnny during his battle with Alzheimer’s at Trinity Village. All the staff became the hands and feet of Jesus with each interaction and for that we are truly grateful. A service of remembrance will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at the Royal Chapel Church of God with Rev. Carlton Davidson and Rev. Dennis Pitts officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

The family will receive from 3:00 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. at the church prior to the service.
