

Born on May, 22, 1940 in Catawba County, NC, he was the son of the late James Homer Bumgarner and Wilma Austin Bumgarner. Lewis was a lifetime member of Temple Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday school teacher for many years. He also co-coordinated the Care Ministry of Temple. As an ordained deacon he was committed to many ministries of the church. “Mr. B” taught Spanish, History and was a Co-coordinator of the ICT program at Saint Stephens. Following his retirement he taught day program at CVCC. “Mr. B” was also referred to affectionately as “Candy Man” after working with Dave Abernethy in school fund raising sales campaigns.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother, Wayne Bumgardner and a sister, Nadine Greenhill.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Priscilla Kay Bumgarner; son, Stephen Bumgarner; daughter, Carole King and husband, David; grandchildren, Andrew King and Fiancée, Krystal Heffinger, Katie McDuffie and husband Kevin, Faith Liberty Bumgarner, and Star Robinette; great grandchildren, Lileigh and Hailee Campbell, and Kylee McDuffie.
A Service will be held at Temple Baptist Church with the Reverend Lloyd King Jr. officiating on Monday, July 17, 2017 at 2pm with burial following the service at Catawba Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 – 1:45 pm at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in honor of Mr. Bumgarner to Temple Baptist Church at 825 LR BLVD SE Hickory, NC 28602.
