

HICKORY NC----Marilyn Jane Craver Guthrie passed away on December 11th after complications from surgery. Born a daughter of Dewey and Ethel Sterner Craver in Warren, Ohio in 1932, Marilyn was a retired teacher. She was a proud member of the 1950 graduating class of Warren G. Harding High School, Kent State University, and received a Master’s Degree in Teaching at Youngstown State University. Marilyn taught in the Warren City Schools for thirty years.
After moving to Hickory, NC, she taught in the F.A.C.E.D. after-school program, and in the adult education program at Catawba Valley Community College. She held professional memberships in the Ohio Education Association, OEA/IPD, Warren Education Association, and was a conference speaker for Al-Anon State Conventions. She is a member of First United Methodist Church, Hickory, where she led children’s ministries, former member of the Senior Choir, United Methodist Women (Circle 2), Timotheans Sunday School Class, Goforthers Senior Group, a Stephen’s Minister, and the Clown Ministry. She also was active as a volunteer for many years with the Boy and Girl Scouts of America, American Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, and Cooperative Christian Ministries.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband, George Guthrie. She is survived by five children - George (Butch) and wife Pamela of Alabama; Denise Filip and husband Michael of Hickory; Margaret (Maureen) Cox and husband Dale of Indiana; Sharyn Guthrie of Hickory; and Peggy Gleason and husband Fred of Alabama. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and their spouses: 2nd Lt. Zach Guthrie and Samantha, Joshua Guthrie and Mallory, Jacob Guthrie and fiancé Amanda Rappe, Rebekah Guthrie, Gloria Guthrie, Benjamin Filip, Samuel Filip, Danielle Prentice and Joseph Prentice. She has two great-grandchildren, Cailin Nicole and Abigail Faith Guthrie. She was preceded in death by 2 sisters - Carson Craver Johnson, and Florence Craver Greene; and 2 brothers, Harry Craver and Russell Craver. She is survived by two brothers, Walter Craver of Orlando, FL; and Frank “Bud” Craver of Niles, OH.
A service of celebration will be held at First United Methodist Church, Hickory, at 12 noon on Tuesday, December 14th. The Rev. Earlynne Bartley and The Rev. Robert E. Roach will preside. The Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. The family will also be available immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church.
The burial service will be held on Friday, December 17th, at Crown Hill Burial Park in Vienna, Ohio at 11:00 AM.
