Newton – Mark Alexander Brewer, 75 of Newton went home to be with the Lord on Monday, March 20, 2023 at Catawba Valley Medical Center surrounded by his family.
Born on June 16, 1947 in Newark, NJ, Master Sergeant Mark Brewer was the son of the late Charles Upshaw and Frances Brewer Upshaw. He served our country in the US Army for 38 years, 11 months and 17 days. He was a faithful soldier, he loved his family dearly and he will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, Gregory Brewer; a brother-in-law, Richard Brown; a sister-in-law, Mary Hawkins; a special aunt, Ella Mae Brewer and his father-in-law, Isaiah Springs.
Those left to cherish his memory include, his wife of 44 years, Sheila Springs Brewer; He leaves to cherish fond memories his loving and supportive wife of forty-three years eight months and thirteen days, Sheila Brewer; four children Tonya Sanders of Lindenwold NJ, Tyrone Brewer (Debra) of Bridgewater NJ, Porsha Buresh (Shawn) of Winston-Salem NC, and Michael Brewer of Elkridge MD.; two brothers, Charles Upshaw (Lisa) of West Orange NJ, Aubrey Upshaw of Allenwood GA, five sisters Leslie Brown of Clayton NC, Bernita Upshaw of Allenwood GA. Debra Wilkins of Randallstown MD, Elizabeth Dickerson of Copperas Cove TX, and Lisa Upshaw of Charlotte NC; eight grandchildren: Anya Brewer, Jasmine Brewer, Tiffany Brewer, Sonya Brewer, Alexis Brewer, Evan Rector, Barrett Buresh, and Sierra Winters; step-mother Juanita Upshaw of Perth Amboy NJ; mother-in-law Zula Springs of Catawba NC; three sister-in-laws Jerri Brewer of Marana AZ, Elizabeth Parker (Jason) of Hickory NC, Vanessa McCullum (Aaron) of Catawba NC; one brother-in-law Jerome Springs of Catawba NC; two aunts Mary Love Mason and Linda James of Catawba NC; and God-Children Ittiely and Derrick Carson, Modesty and Craig Thompson, Hope and Ed Brown, Autumn Harrison, Tommy Garrett and Ashleigh Parker-Dunston; special friends Thomas Fisher, Luther Hathcock, Quinette Gay and Pathmark and Army friends and a host of nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at St. Luke’s Methodist Church at 52 16th Ave. NW, Hickory, NC 28601, on Monday, March 27, 2023 at 1:00 pm. The eulogy will be rendered by Rev. James L. Reeves, Pastor of Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Hickory, NC. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm.
