Michael was born in Catawba County to Ralph Newell Heavner and wife Metta Travis Heavner on October 13, 1943. He attended St. Stephen’s High School, graduating in 1962. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving for 2 years. He was a Volunteer Member of the St. Stephens Fire Department. He was married to Sue Ester in 1966. He worked in the furniture industry for over 50 years, last working for Wesley Hall Furniture in Conover. He was an active member of Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church for over 25 years, involving teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School and singing in the choir. He provided services and leadership to Boy Scout Troops in the Hickory area. He enjoyed team bowling for many years, crafting, travelling and spending time outdoors. He was a dedicated family man, recently spending most of his time with his great-grandson. He loved being “Paw-Paw” to his grandchildren and great-grandson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Billie H. Sigmon.
Michael is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sue Ester Heavner; daughter, Crystal Wright and husband, Richard of Lenoir, foster son, Khanh Nguyen and wife Hanh of Newton; grandchildren, Courtney Clinard and husband Luther, Haley and Michael Nguyen; great-grandson, Lawson Clinard; sisters, Peggy Davis and husband Glenn of Hickory, Patricia “Pat” Hedrick and husband Joe of Hickory, Almieta Helton of Taylorsville and Judy Lutz of Hickory; brothers, Ralph Dale Heavner and Randy Heavner, both of Claremont; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Family and friends will be gathering at Drum Funeral Home, Hickory on Monday, May 10, 2021 at 1:00 p.m. for viewing. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park at 2:30 p.m. A receiving will be held at Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church in Hickory at 4:00 p.m. with memorial services immediately following at 5:00 p.m with Rev. Michael Stone officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Pisgah Lutheran Church, 9379 NC Hwy 127 N, Hickory, NC 28601.
