Patricia Barringer Maynor was a Christian woman, loving and caring in all ways. She was trustworthy and traditional in her approach to her life and in her relationships. She was kind-hearted with the special kind of attitude that earned the respect of all who knew her. She was also a woman who was lovingly stubborn according to her husband Ray. Realistic about life, she was always ready and prepared to take on responsibility.
Patricia was born on May 15, 1944 in Greensboro, NC. Her parents were D. Paul and Ila Barringer. Patricia was raised in the Longview area of Hickory, NC. She was brought up to be self-confident and dependable. These were traits that would serve her well throughout her life.
Growing up in the Barringer household was a bit different than most homes. There were good times to be had, but just as often there was a fair share of challenges as well. However, Patricia was able to work through the usual family problems when they would arise. Patricia had one brother, Larry Erwin Barringer, who was born in 1939 and died 1987. Patricia was always consistently loyal to her family and friends. Patricia’s best friend growing up was Jane Abernathy, growing up in the church together and being very active with the youth choir and other youth activities. Patricia went to Hickory High School in Hickory, NC and graduated in 1962. She was fortunate to have several very close friends during her life.
Patricia met a young man named Ray Maynor when the neighbor across the street was unloading building supplies with his friend Doug. Ray and Patricia started talking and dating shortly thereafter. On their first date they went to see a Clint Eastwood western movie; right up Ray’s alley. Soon after, Patricia and Ray exchanged wedding vows on April 15, 1962 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Hickory, NC. They were happily married for 62 years. Patricia was compassionate and lovingly devoted to Ray. Patricia held endearing, traditional values about marriage and family life. She took the responsibility of marriage to heart, giving it her total commitment. She was a great source of strength to Ray and using her gifts at nurturing one-on-one relationships, she worked hard to make her new family happy. Patricia and Ray soon after being married, gave birth to a son named, Ray Lee Maynor, II. Lee was born on July 27, 1964. Unfortunately, they lost him to cancer on September 3, 2022. They had another son Landon Wayne Maynor who unfortunately died at his birth.
Patricia became fast friends with Ray’s brother Wayne's wife Sharon. Patricia and Sharon also shared the same birthday, go figure. Patricia and Ray owned Ray’s Mini Mart for about 5 years. Patricia would talk about the stunts that Ray and his brother Wayne would pull, like picking up Sharon and stuffing her in the cooler. Patricia also became fast friends with Ray’s 1st cousin, Roger Hildebran’s wife, who was also named Sharon. All are still wonderful, loving friends and family to this day.
Patricia liked to collect pewter souvenirs amongst other things. Ray and Patricia also worked at Hickory Printing for many years. They also enjoyed traveling the US, camping and hiking, and being extras in a lot of movies and TV. She liked to experience new things first-hand as well as learn about them. Patricia and Ray were great hosts of Saturday game nights with Sharon and Kenneth, Lee’s cousin, and sometimes Brian, (He lives out of town). We all got to join in the family fun along with Lee and his wife Diane and would play the night away.
Patricia also enjoyed her flowers and going to the mountain house that the family built close to Bakersville, NC. Such a beautiful place for peace and comfort.
Patricia was a woman who was dedicated and devoted to her faith. Ray and Patricia became members of Central Baptist Church in Hildebran, NC. She was a sympathetic woman who valued her beliefs and was willing to work tirelessly for them. Patricia always brought with her a great attitude and a high degree of common sense. She used straightforward methods to successfully complete any task placed before her and always seemed to know exactly what needed to be done. As a woman who always showed great commitment to the things she believed in, she was never afraid to roll up her sleeves and dig right in when she was asked.
Patricia passed away on February 1, 2024, at The Greens, under the care of Carolina Caring. She fought a brave battle for many years with ALS. She was committed to the traditional values that she upheld her entire life. She committed herself to being a diligent worker who expected the same effort in return from those around her.
