

Ruby Sullivan Bartlett passed from this world on February 28, 2017. Ruby was born on July 14, 1924 in Lansing, North Carolina. Her parents were John Wilson and Ida May Sullivan. Ruby was the last remaining child of their ten children.Ruby led a full and exciting life.
During World War II she was a USO pin up girl and worked in a Seattle airplane factory. She married a handsome Marine, James Hollis Bartlett and moved to New York City. She raised her two children, Susan and James, in Saddle Brook, NJ—twelve miles outside her beloved city. During their childhood she was active in the Parent-Teacher Association, the Girl Scouts and the Warren Point Presbyterian Church. Upon her husband’s retirement from Conrail in 1985, Ruby and James returned to Lansing, NC and were active members at the Helton United Methodist Church. James passed away in 1993. Ruby moved to Abernathy Laurels Retirement Community in 2012 where she made wonderful friends. She lived independently until she died.
Ruby had a zest for living and loved traveling. Until a hip replacement sidelined her in 2014, she traveled the world and made friends wherever she went.
Ruby is survived by two children, daughter, Susan (David) of Black Mountain, NC and Tampa, FL and son, James (Molly) of Laurel Springs, NC; six grandchildren of whom she was fiercely proud: Jessica (Eamonn), Katharine, James, Andrew, Ryan, Allie and one great-grandchild; Macauley.
The family expresses gratitude to the community at Abernathy Laurels and the wonderful caregivers at the Sherrills Ford Hospice House. Ruby will be sorely missed. She was a wonderful mother, Nanny, Grandma and friend.
A memorial service will be held at Helton United Methodist Church in Lansing, NC at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Ruby’s name to Catawba Regional Hospice, 3975 Robinson Road, Newton, NC 28658
