Shirley "Fink/Nene" Norma (Moore) Massingill
March 31, 1929 – October 1, 2019
Shirley Norma Moore Massingill (“Fink/Nene”) was born March 31, 1929 in Jersey City, New Jersey. She was raised during the World War II era, along with brothers Jackie and Howie (both World War II veterans), and sister, Mabel, all of whom pre-deceased her. She married World War II veteran Edward Massingill and they had three daughters, twins Terry and Sherry, and Tammy. Shirley always displayed loving support for her family, and she was the glue that kept them all together. In 1974 when daughter Terry was very unexpectedly lost to illness, leaving behind a young husband and two-year-old daughter Tara, Shirley was right there to help raise her granddaughter. Bruce and Shirley united in the upbringing of Tara, but she was quite adamant about not being called “granny.” Hence, the loving nickname of “Fink” was born. Shirley enjoyed her work as a seamstress on production for several years and was later promoted to a supervisory position over 30 seamstresses. Her expertise is displayed in beautiful window treatments throughout their home. When Bruce acquired Carolina Laser Cutting in 1993, Shirley became employed there and served the company as secretary and treasurer for approximately 12 years, before retiring due to the onset of Alzheimer’s. She suffered with this dreaded disease for more than 12 years and ultimately passed quietly at the age of 90, with loving granddaughter Tara Overman, great granddaughter Terry Overman, and longtime friend Donna Siler at her bedside. She will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by all who knew her, including two daughters, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Service will be held at 1 pm Saturday, October 5, 2019 at Catawba Funeral Home with Father Jim Collins officiating. Burial to follow at Catawba Memorial Park. A visitation will be held from 12:00 to 12:45pm prior to the service. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at 225 N Michigan Ave. Floor 17. Chicago, IL 60601.
