

Virgil Walter Eller, 76, of Hickory, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday March 4th, 2017 at Frye Regional Medical Center. Born February 24th, 1941 in Catawba County, he was the son of the late George and Bessie Woodie Eller. During his career, he was an Officer with the Hickory City Police Department, as well as a Road Deputy for the Catawba County Sheriff's Department. He later became a Detective,a job he really loved. He was an avid marksman, and won several trophies for marksmanship. He ended his career working in furniture frame manufacturing along with his brother A.C. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Hollifield; brothers Dayton J. Eller, A.C. Eller, and Harold Eller; and a granddaughter; Megan Grace Eller. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 51 years, Sheila Sparks Eller, his three children, Mrs. Cathy Eller Honeycutt and husband Mike, Gary Eller and wife Melissa, and Michael Eller and wife Marsha; three grandchildren, Marissa Eller, Grayson Eller, and Jonathan Honeycutt; four sisters; Vivian Williams, Willadean Elliott, Linda Goforth and husband Jerry, and Doris Dillon; and a sister-in-law; Katie Eller; along with many nieces and nephews. He was formerly an active member of Huntington Hills Church of God, having served as Clerk & Treasurer for many years. He was currently a devoted member of Hickory Pentecostal Holiness Church. He loved the Lord, and was an active witness of God’s goodness and mercy. Even in the times of illness, he relied on the Lord for his strength. He was a long time supporter of the Atlanta Braves, having attended many games. He shared his love for sports with his grandson, Grayson. He remained a fan even in the bad times. He loved baking, and he was well known for his pound cakes, a legacy left to his granddaughter, Marissa and grandson, Jonathan. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday March 9th, 2017 at Catawba Funerals & Cremations with Rev. Joseph Yarborough officiating. Burial will follow at Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12 PM -2 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations are requested to be made to the Hickory Pentecostal Holiness Church Senior Life Fund, 261 21st Street SE Hickory, to be used for our new property upgrade.
