She was born in Bluefield, VA on September 1, 1926, to the late Wiley and Effie Goodman Faw; she was the 11th of 12 children.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Alfred Rumley; a daughter Barbara Witt; 7 brothers and 4 sisters, grandchild Joshua Holcomb and great grandchild Keileigh Kirby.
A longtime member of Highland Baptist Church for over 50 years; she loved God, family, and friends. She would always talk to people about Jesus and she wanted everyone to go to Heaven. She loved singing and reading the Bible to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved cooking and she shared her talent, not only with family, but also made cakes for friends on birthdays and special occasions.
Virginia participated in the Joy Makers, the Red Hat Society, Sassy Stitchers, and Foothills Line Dancers. She was owner/operator of Springs Road Flea Market and the Drive-In Theater, where they showed their first movie in 1952. She also worked as a bank teller and was a cafeteria worker in several local schools.
As hobbies, she enjoyed gardening, quilting, water aerobics, ceramics, sewing, crocheting, and quilting. However, her passion was traveling; she had visited the Holy Land, took several cruises, and as of September 2019 she had completed visiting all 50 states by the age of 92. Her last trip was with Christian Tours to see the Creation Museum and Ark in July 2021.
She is survived by her daughters Brenda Holcomb and husband Mack of Hickory, and Betty Thornburg and husband Bucky of Hickory; her son James Rumley and wife Angie of Taylorsville; grandchildren Michael Witt (Susie), David Holcomb, Bree Kirby (Robert), Gage Holcomb, Britt Thornburg (Tracy), Brock Thornburg (Jessica), Briana Nobles (BJ), Shane Triplett (Renee), James Rumley Jr., and Amillia Rumley; great grandchildren, Jennifer, Nikki, Alex, Willow, Dakota, Landon, Payce, Thaxton, Paislee, Paxton, Braxton, Barrett, Charlotte, and Savannah.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, May 25, 2020 from 12:00 pm to 1:45 pm at Highland Baptist Church.
Funeral service will be held Wednesday, May 25, 2022 at 2:00 pm at Highland Baptist Church with Reverend Kenny Robison and Reverend Jeff Myers officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be David Holcomb, Gage Holcomb, Britt Thornburg, Brock Thornburg, Shane Triplett, and James Rumley Jr.
