

Mr. Flake was born November 26, 1922 in Anson County, a son of the late Fred F. Flake and Lottie Cameron Flake. He was the beloved husband of the late Joyce Stafford Flake for 55 years. He worked with the North Carolina Agricultural Service from 1946 to 1957. Mr. Flake resided in Newton, NC for 51 years where he worked as a district sales manager for DeKalb Agricultural Research Association until his retirement in 1984. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in Newton and then Deerfield Methodist Church in Boone.
Mr. Flake received his college education at Brevard Junior College and graduated from NC State University in 1946. He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the CBI Theater of War. He enjoyed a lifetime of gardening.
Mr. Flake was preceded in death by his wife Joyce S Flake, a daughter Jane Flake Smith, brothers Cameron, James, and Joe Flake. He is survived by two daughters, Dona and Eddie Alejandro of Boone and Cindy Woodfin of Mebane, NC; son-in-law Barry H. Smith of Boone; six grandchildren, Brian Steelmon, Alicia Clawson, Brent Smith, Jody Davis, Emily Keck, and Ashley Hoge; and twelve great-grandchildren, Zackery, Aeryal, Justus, Triston, Alex, Jude, Hayden, Lila, Nick, Ella, Bailey, Cameron, and Georgia. He is also survived by a sister Julia F. Teal of Wadesboro, NC, one brother Robert D. Flake from Raleigh, NC, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Deerfield Methodist Church on January 6, 2018 at 2:00. The family will receive friends immediately before the memorial service in the fellowship hall of the church beginning at 1:00. Following the service will be Military Honors by The NC National Guard and The Caldwell County Veterans Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Deerfield Methodist Church Building Fund (PO Box 1337, Boone, NC 28607), or First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund (300 N Main Ave., Newton, NC 28658).
