

Alfons P. Gruenthaler passed on June 3, 2026, at the age of 94. Beloved husband of Helga for 66 wonderful years, a testament to a lifetime of devotion, partnership, and love. He was a loving father to Richard (Eliana) and Diana (Michael) Farsang, and a cherished Opa to Melissa, Erica, and Joseph, who brought him immense pride and joy.
He will be dearly missed by his siblings Theo, Karl, Monika Lurz, and Linde Weidhaus, as well as by his many nieces and nephews, all of whom were touched by his kindness, wisdom, and gentle spirit. Alfons was predeceased by his parents, Johann and Maria Gruenthaler, and his brother, Franz.
Alfons found great happiness in the outdoors and took pride in working with his hands. He became an avid beekeeper after retirement, he lovingly tended his hives and enjoyed sharing the honey he harvested. His gardens flourished under his care, reflecting the patience, dedication, and appreciation for nature that defined him. Whether building, repairing, or creating, Alfons was remarkably handy and could often be found working on a project with skill and determination.
Above all else, Alfons treasured his family. He delighted in spending time with those he loved, sharing stories, laughter, and the values that guided his life. He was a proud man who also faithfully served his country, carrying a strong sense of duty, honor, and integrity throughout his years.
Alfons leaves behind a legacy of love, hard work, generosity, and unwavering devotion to family. His warm smile, steady presence, and quiet strength will be remembered always by those fortunate enough to have known and loved him.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Ignatius Loyola Parish, 129 S Broadway, Hicksville, NY 11801, on Monday, June 8, 2026, at 11:15 am.
A Committal Service will follow at Calverton National Cemetery, 210 Princeton Blvd, Calverton, New York 11933.
