The family and friends of Charles Francis Crum, celebrate the life of a true servant of God, who was called home on November 23, 2018, at the age of 79, after a valiant and inspiring battle with multiple health challenges. He is survived by his wife, Helen, to whom he was married to for 56 years, and their three children: two daughters Linda and Susan, and his son Joseph. He is also survived by his brother, Joseph, and Joseph’s wife Carol, who live in North Carolina. His two sons-in-law John (Linda) and Nick (Susan) as well his daughter-in-law Adrienne (Joe) also mourn his loss to the family. However, his legacy lives on within his five amazing and talented grandchildren Fiona and Connor (Linda and John) and Nicholas, Elizabeth and Grace (Susan and Nick).
Charlie and Helen both grew up in the Williamsburg/Greenpoint section of Brooklyn, and met in 1959. They were engaged to be married in December 1961 and celebrated their marriage in October 1962. In 1967, they moved to Port Washington, Long Island where they settled in the Manorhaven enclave to start and raise a family. They both were active in the local parish, Our Lady of Fatima, with Charlie being an usher and a sacristan. Charlie was known for his quiet kindness, and constant presence in and around the parish family at Our Lady of Fatima. The family enjoyed trips to California and Las Vegas, to visit Helen’s brother Tommy and his wife Joyce, as well as trips to Disney, Lake George and Niagara Falls. Charlie worked for 40 years for the Freirich Foods, formerly of Long Island City as a butcher in the smokehouse. Always faithful to his wife, family and church, the work was hard with sometimes crazy hours, but he always found time to be home for his family, and to serve every weekend in church. They sold their home in Port Washington and moved to Blue Ridge Condos in Farmingville Long Island in 2012, and lived there for 5 years before selling and joining the Affinity Skilled Living Community in Oakdale.
Charlie’s quiet yet strong faith in God, kept him committed and determined to want to be with his bride Helen, even in the midst of increasing health challenges. He returns home to God, with a life well-lived in service to his family, and to his God.
