The Souchet family mourns the passing of 82-year-old Emeranio Souchet Rosario from stroke complications in Ithaca, New York on July 16, 2020. Emeranio was born on September 28, 1937 in Guayanilla, Puerto Rico (PR), the third child of Emeranio Souchet and Rosa Elena Rosario Lúgaro.
Emeranio spent his adolescence in and around the Ponce, PR area and moved to New York City as a young teenager. He remained both a proud Ponceñero and New Yorker until his death.
He served in the United States Air Force from 1955 to 1958. In the early 1970’s he founded his own travel agency, also specializing in tax preparation and automobile insurance, in Spanish Harlem, Manhattan. He operated this business until 2015.
A strong believer in self-improvement and giving back to the community, he graduated from Brooklyn College with a degree in Economics in 1977 and served for several years as an officer with what was then called “the El Barrio Merchants Association” in the 1980’s.
He is best remembered for serving as the “patriarch” of the extended Souchet-Rosario family and spent much of his time assisting relatives in both the New York and Ponce metropolitan areas.
His favorite pastimes included extolling the virtues of his children and grandchildren, and conversation about his Ponce roots and his adopted city of New York.
Emeranio will be missed.
He is survived by his six children: Andrew, Theresa, Brian, Tanya, John and Flor, 16 grandchildren: David, Maria, Isabelle, Steven, Nathan, Shivana, Melanie, Brian, Evan, Aiden, Brendan, Madison, Lennox, Donovan, Matthew, and Noah, and many nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Vernon C. Wagner Funeral Home, Hicksville, NY with a private funeral service at the Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, NY.
